Recently, Asian telenovelas has been dominating the hearts of Filipinos and some of their great films are now available in local movie houses I picked this Korean movie for my review. Yeopgi, its original Korean title, is a film that combines some seriously funny moments with a subtle but yet very intriguing love story. It was based on an on-line serial written by Kim Ho-sik that detailed his relationship with his off-the-wall college girlfriend. This was eventually compiled into a best-selling book and caught the attention of director Kwak Jae-young, who wrote the script for the film. The story kicks off with college student Kyun-woo (Korean pop singer Cha Tae-hyun, in his feature film debut) crossing paths with an intoxicated girl (Jeon Ji-hyun of "Il Mare") on a late-night subway. Just before she passes out, the girl looks at Kyun-woo and calls him 'honey'. The other passengers, assuming him to be the hapless girl's boyfriend, demand that Kyun-woo look after her. After carrying her on his back for what seems to be miles, Kyun-woo drops the girl off at a motel. But instead of leaving her and getting on his way, Kyun-woo finds himself intrigued by the nameless girl and vows to do whatever he can to heal her sorrow. -mediacircus
There are only 2 main characters and the others are just the parents of Cha Tae-hyun and Jeon Ji-hyun. The people would feel bored for only seeing the two of them in a 2 hours movie, a factual challenge they amazingly succeeded. The main stand out would be Jeon Ji-hyun, be ready of this Korean star because beneath her pretty face are some surprisingly tormenting dreadful behaviors in her character that may either make you laugh-out-loud or offended (if you’re a guy). Partially, the film was divided into two halves. The first part introduces the casts and internalizes the character’s wacky atmosphere that will run in the first part. “My Sassy Girl" is a genre-bending exercise that throws in elements of the teen comedy, the traditional melodramatic romance with funny absurd moments of Kyun-woo with the playful innocent-looking poignant girl in the first half of the film. While the other half, including the overtime, brings the ‘romantic’ side of the story. There are a lot of melodramatic moments in the movie, but these moments appeared only in the near end, at the moment when we are really attach to the characters and that is why the drama really works in the movie.
Since the movie was based on a true story of Kim Ho-sik, the hard-to-believe hilarious instances (like Cha Tae-hyun being forced to exchange his rubber shoes with Jeon Ji-hyun’s high heels) can easily be appreciated by the moviegoers. Scenes from the movie can truly happen. The story doesn’t revolve around Korean culture, another reason why anybody can value the film if you’re thinking of its vague influence. If you’re expecting for some sex-dirt sort of scenes, I am sorry to disappoint you. But in the second thought, I strongly recommend this film for any age, gender, class, phylum, order etc. You will surely love the Sassy Girl and might possibly get turned on with Kyun-woo despite his average look. Concluding that Kyun-woo was a plaything to help heel a broken heart, the end was just the beginning of their genuine serious relationship.
Personally, I already loved this film when I first saw it in 2002 at Star Movie Chinese with Mandarin subtitle. “My Sassy Girl” is now my number one all time favorite movie. I watch them when Im depressed and consistently before exam weeks. If youve already seen the movie, got clicked into it and wanted to have a hard copy, you can buy it online in YesAsia or in Manila along Ongpin street with English subtitles.
